The threat
Motorcycle theft in Ontario rose 35% in 2025 (Ontario Provincial Police data). High-displacement sport bikes and cruisers most targeted. Most theft happens at apartment parking lots and during charging stops on long rides.
#1 Disc lock + grip lock ($60-150 combined)
A bright-colored disc lock blocks the front wheel. A grip lock prevents the front brake from releasing — bike can’t even be pushed. Two cheap deterrents force thieves to skip your bike.
#2 Motion-activated alarm ($80-200)
120dB alarm triggered by tilt or motion. Wakes up the neighborhood. Most thieves abandon a noisy target.
#3 GPS tracker ($150-300 + subscription)
Recovery aid, not prevention. Police recover GPS-tracked bikes 60%+ vs <5% untracked. Worth it for $15-20k sport bikes and touring rigs.
#4 Bike cover ($40-100)
Hides identifying details. Thieves can’t quickly assess value. Surprisingly effective at parking lots.
#5 Chain through frame
Heavy chain through frame to fixed object. Works at home (anchor point in garage). Not for parking lots (no anchor).
What’s overkill or ineffective
- Stock factory immobilizer (defeated in 30 seconds by experienced thief)
- Faraday key pouches (motorcycles mostly use mechanical keys, no relay attack)
- Hidden kill switches (good supplement, not standalone)
