INSTALL AUDIT — every measurable failure

❌ Wrong product for the application

Otodata sells the TAG X line for tank monitoring — propane tanks, oil tanks, industrial fluid tanks. The product datasheet describes “remote monitoring of stationary tanks.” Using it as a covert vehicle tracker is an off-label application that:

• Voids Otodata’s customer-use terms (whoever bought it likely violated their purchase agreement)
• Doesn’t include vehicle-environment certification (vibration, thermal cycling, automotive EMC)
• Uses a power-cycling profile designed for stationary tanks reporting once per day, not continuous vehicle tracking — meaning location updates are coarse and slow

❌ Concealment by electrical tape

The installer wrapped the device in electrical tape to attach it. Electrical tape degrades to sticky residue within 90 days under vehicle thermal cycling. Once the tape lets go (which it would have within a season), the device would have rolled around the rear-seat cavity making noise the owner would have eventually investigated.

❌ Antenna pigtail exposed

The 903 MHz antenna pigtail was visible outside the tape wrap. A primitive faraday attempt using tape provides essentially zero RF shielding once an external antenna is present. The installer didn’t understand that the device transmits and that its antenna is the source — wrapping the body in tape while leaving the antenna out is conceptually backward.

❌ Wrong physical mounting

No factory mount point used. The device was wedged into the cavity, not bonded or secured. Vibration would have dislodged it eventually.

❌ Wrong device for vehicle tracking economics

The TAG X 2R0 is designed to phone home every 24 hours or longer (a tank doesn’t change quickly). A vehicle moves continuously. Anyone using this for vehicle tracking gets stale, low-resolution location data — they’d find out their target was in Pickering eight hours ago, not that they’re at a specific address right now. The installer either: – Didn’t understand the product – Was using it because it’s what they had access to (perhaps stolen from a legitimate Otodata distributor) – Knew the limitations but billed the client without disclosing

❌ Battery is non-replaceable

The Li-SOCl₂ primary cells in this unit are not replaceable per Otodata’s OEM warning. Once the battery dies, the device is e-waste. Whoever installed it accepted that the install would die when the battery did — meaning either short-term surveillance (months) or hope-and-pray for years of coverage on a 5-year battery in a vibration environment it wasn’t designed for.

WHAT A COMPETENT VEHICLE-TRACKING INSTALL WOULD REQUIRE

If someone actually wanted to track a vehicle properly (and legally, with consent):

• Vehicle-grade product with continuous LTE Cat-M1 cellular, not industrial FHSS designed for tanks
• Hardwired power integration to the vehicle harness, not battery
• Internal antenna in a sealed RF-tight enclosure, no exposed pigtails
• Mounted in a factory cavity behind body panels, automotive-grade VHB tape
• Reporting cadence of seconds to minutes, not days
• FCC/IC certification specifically for vehicle environment
• Written consent from the vehicle’s registered owner — without this, criminal liability under Code s. 184, s. 264, s. 430

The installer of this Otodata TAGL2 met none of these standards.

Otodata Technologies Inc. is a Canadian company based in Quebec. Their primary commercial market is legitimate industrial tank monitoring — propane suppliers, fuel oil distributors, industrial fluid level monitoring. The TAG X product line is a real, certified, established commercial product with regulatory paperwork going back to 2021 (TAGL2) and updated through 2025 (TAGL3 generation).

This documentation page is not about Otodata’s legitimate tank-monitor business. It’s about the off-label use of their TAG X hardware for covert vehicle tracking. We document the off-label install pattern. The legitimate tank-monitor market is not the subject of this page.

Otodata’s response options:

1. Verified-purchase program — require buyers to declare the asset class being monitored (tank vs. vehicle). Off-label vehicle sales become traceable.
2. Certified-installer program — endorse Fob Experts (and other certified installers) for vehicle-context customers who want a legitimate consent-documented install.
3. Distributor audit — track which distributors are reselling to non-tank customers.
4. Continue current business model — devices continue showing up in covert vehicle installs, and this page continues to document each one.

If you’re checking your own vehicle for a TAG X / TAGL family device:

• RF signature: 902–928 MHz FHSS, 50 channels, brief packet bursts (not continuous)
• Detection tool: any 900 MHz capable SDR (RTL-SDR works, bladeRF works)
• Software: SDRangel waterfall on 902–928 MHz band, look for short hop bursts
• Visual hiding spots: anywhere with a clear path to sky for the antenna — under rear seats, cargo areas, trunk wells, behind plastic body panels
• Physical signature: typically 6×3×2 cm rectangular module + external antenna pigtail
• PCB markings to verify: silkscreen will show “EVI-TAG-XLR” or similar Otodata identifiers
• Battery indicator: if the housing is plastic-and-tape rather than factory case, the device was repackaged for covert install
• Sound test: dead silent. The device makes no audible noise — it just transmits.
