The Quectel BG96 module the LandAirSea 54 is built around is a standard commercial cellular IoT chip used in thousands of products globally. Its RF signature is well-documented and detectable by any cellular-aware sweep.

DETECTION METHOD

Method Time
Visual inspection of undercarriage 30–90 seconds (magnetic mount on bare steel leaves rust ring)
RF spectrum sweep — LTE Cat-M1 bands 5–15 seconds (active transmission catches immediately)
Cellular modem detection (passive listening) 10 seconds when device pings tower
Magnetic detector Instant when held within 30 cm
Average end-to-end detection time Under 4 minutes including walk-around

INSTALL AUDIT — what makes every LandAirSea 54 install Grade F

❌ Magnetic mount visible

The device has a strong rare-earth magnet built into the case. Installers slap it to the undercarriage rail, the bumper substructure, or the spare-tire well. Every install we have removed left a visible rust ring on the chassis where the magnet contacted bare metal. Owner could spot on any oil change.

❌ Cellular module broadcasts continuously

The Quectel BG96 inside maintains continuous cellular registration with the nearest tower while powered. Our RF spectrum sweep catches this transmission before we even crawl under the vehicle.

❌ Customer billing subscription is traceable

The required SilverCloud subscription is a credit-card-billed monthly service. When we recover one of these devices, we preserve the SIM card, IMEI, and packaging. The SilverCloud account behind that IMEI is recoverable through legal subpoena — including the billing credit card, billing address, and login IP address of the installer.

❌ Battery exhaustion is a feature, not a bug

The LandAirSea 54 runs 4–14 days per charge cycle. After that, the installer must physically retrieve the device, recharge it, and reinstall — or the install dies. This means whoever installed it is returning to the victim’s vehicle every 1–2 weeks. That schedule itself becomes evidence.

❌ No environmental certification for vehicle use

The 54 is IP65 rated. That is fine for tanks and stationary assets. It is not rated for road salt, brake dust, vibration, or thermal cycling. Devices we’ve removed after one Canadian winter showed corrosion on the charging port and case seams. Customer paid for a tracker that wasn’t designed for the environment it was installed in.

WHAT A COMPETENT INSTALL WOULD LOOK LIKE

  • Hardwired LTE Cat-M1 unit integrated into factory harness — no battery to maintain
  • Mounted in a sealed body cavity (frame rail interior, behind bumper foam, in spare-tire well under cover) — not on visible undercarriage
  • Cellular SIM provisioned through a fleet eSIM service, not a consumer credit-card subscription
  • Subscription billing in the vehicle owner’s name (because consent-documented installs are the only legal kind)
  • Concealment grade A or B per our published Concealment Quality Rubric

LANDAIRSEA AS A COMPANY

LandAirSea Systems Inc. is a US-based GPS tracking company. Their primary commercial market is legitimate fleet management and asset tracking — courier fleets, equipment monitoring, recreational vehicle recovery. The LandAirSea 54 is a real, certified, established consumer product.

This documentation page is not about LandAirSea’s legitimate fleet customers. It is about the off-label use of the LandAirSea 54 for covert vehicle tracking by individuals and unlicensed installers. We document the off-label install pattern. The legitimate fleet market is not the subject of this page.

LandAirSea’s response options:

  1. Verified-purchase program — require purchasers to attest that the device will be installed on owned assets, with written declaration archived
  2. Tamper-evident packaging — every device ships with serial-coupled QR code that, when scanned, requires the buyer to register a vehicle VIN they own
  3. Distributor audit — track which retailers (SpyTec, Amazon resellers) are selling without consent verification
  4. Continue current business model — devices continue showing up in covert vehicle installs, this page continues to document each one

DETECTION GUIDE FOR VEHICLE OWNERS

If you suspect a LandAirSea 54 on your vehicle:

  • Look under the car. Magnetic GPS mounts are typically in the rear wheel well, on the gas tank skid plate, or stuck to the rear frame rail. The magnet is strong — they don’t move during driving.
  • Watch for rust rings. Magnetic mounts on bare steel leave visible circular rust marks that don’t match factory wear patterns.
  • Listen for LTE pings. A nearby AM/FM radio will sometimes pick up brief audio buzzes when the cellular modem registers — these come at intervals of seconds to minutes.
  • Most reliable: book a sweep. Book here →

Editorial Policy + Partnership Statement

Documentation on this page is sourced from public FCC and ISED filings, manufacturer marketing materials, retailer product pages, and Fob Experts' own sweep recovery photos and field notes. We do not publish material that is private, leaked, or sourced through any unauthorized means.

We do not accept payment — in cash, credit, hardware, advertising, or any other form — to remove documentation about specific products, manufacturers, or retailers. Editorial independence is non-negotiable.

Verified-Consent Vendor Program: Manufacturers and retailers who adopt a verified-consent buyer process — where buyers self-attest in writing that they are installing on their own vehicle — are eligible to have their documentation moved to a Verified-Consent Vendor archive with a partner badge. This is a structural change they adopt, not a transaction.

Factual corrections are accepted in writing from manufacturers and retailers. Verified corrections are published with a dated correction note. Submit corrections to .

Legal threats do not change editorial outcomes. The remedy for inaccurate documentation is a verified correction, not removal under threat.

Law-enforcement coordination: Fob Experts has extended a formal standing offer of coordination to Durham Regional Police Service and other GTA agencies. If a sweep recovers a device bearing active law-enforcement authorization markings or court-warrant identifiers, removal is paused and the agency is contacted for verification before work continues. Customer right to inspect their own vehicle remains intact at all times. Full statement →
