If the dealer just told you a replacement smart key for your Honda is $450 and they need to order it — close that tab. This post breaks down what car keys actually cost in 2026 in the GTA, by brand and key type, so you walk into the conversation knowing what is fair.
Why is car key replacement so expensive?
Three things drive the cost:
- The key blank itself — modern smart keys contain an immobilizer chip plus radio circuitry. The blank alone runs $30 to $120 from the manufacturer.
- Programming software access — the dealer pays Honda or Toyota for software licenses. NASTF-certified locksmiths pay for the same access at much lower per-call rates. Non-certified shops cannot program restricted brands at all.
- Labour — cutting the blade, marrying the new key to the car’s computer, and verifying it locks/unlocks/starts takes 30 to 90 minutes per key.

How much does the dealer charge?
Toronto dealers we tracked in 2025:
- Honda Centre — $450 for a CR-V smart key, 2-week wait
- Lexus dealer (Yonge) — $475 for an RX smart key, plus $150 “programming fee”
- Mercedes-Benz Toronto — $600+ for any FBS3 key
- Range Rover dealer — $700+ for a Velar key
For the same keys we charge $199, $279, $349, and $399 respectively — programmed same-day.
What changes the price?
- OEM versus aftermarket — aftermarket saves $50-200. Same chip inside, same lock/unlock/push-start. Black plastic shell instead of branded logo.
- Spare key versus all-keys-lost (AKL) — having one working key cuts programming time. AKL requires us to read or bypass the immobilizer module, adding $50-150.
- Restricted brands — BMW G-chassis, Mercedes FBS3, Range Rover UWB require NASTF VSP credentials and per-call software fees that legit locksmiths absorb but cheap shops cannot do at all.
- Mobile versus drive-in — mobile dispatch adds $30-50 for fuel and travel. Drive to our Pickering shop and save it.

⚡ Get instant quoteRed flags when shopping locksmiths
- Refusing to give a phone quote — “we will check on arrival” means they raise the price once you commit
- No physical address or only a residential one — call-center dispatch fronting for the lowest-bid sub-contractor
- Cannot say “NASTF VSP certified” — they cannot legally program restricted brands
- Cash-only — no warranty means no recourse
- Quoted prices under $80 for smart keys — bait-and-switch tactic, real charge after arrival
How long does it take?
Most car keys are 30-60 minutes from arrival to driving away. All-keys-lost on restricted brands can take 90-180 minutes. We start within 15 minutes of your arrival at the shop.
Bottom line
If a Toronto dealer just quoted you over $400 for a standard smart key, you are paying brand markup for a service that costs them $80 in software access plus 30 minutes of labour. A NASTF-certified locksmith does the identical job for half. Same key, same warranty, same drive-away result — in your pocket the same day.
