The Honda CR-V is the most-replaced smart key we program — for good reason. Over 1.3 million CR-Vs are on Canadian roads, the smart key system has been around since 2007, and Honda’s dealer pricing has crept up to $450+ for a single replacement. Here is exactly what it costs from a NASTF-certified locksmith, what the process looks like, and how to choose between spare-key and all-keys-lost service.
What kind of Honda CR-V smart key do you have?
The CR-V has three smart key generations:
- 2007-2014 CR-V — transponder turn-key with remote fob. $129 to cut and program a spare. We cover all years.
- 2015-2016 CR-V Touring — push-to-start smart key. $229 programmed same day.
- 2017-2025 CR-V (LX/EX/EX-L/Touring) — push-to-start smart key. $199-249 depending on aftermarket versus OEM.
Honda dealer cost in 2026
We surveyed 4 Toronto-area Honda dealers in early 2026 for a CR-V Touring smart key replacement:
- Honda Centre Toronto — $450 plus $50 programming fee, 7-14 day wait
- Whitby Honda — $425, 5-10 day wait
- Markham Honda — $475, 10-14 day wait
- Ajax Honda — $450, 5-7 day wait
Average dealer price: $461 plus HST plus a 1-2 week wait. Our price: $229 plus HST, same day.
What is included in our price?
- New smart key fob (OEM or aftermarket — your choice)
- Key blade cut to your VIN
- Smart key programming and immobilizer marriage
- Lock, unlock, panic, and trunk function testing
- Push-start engine verification
- 90-day workmanship warranty
How long does Honda CR-V smart key programming take?
For a spare key (you have one working key already): 30-40 minutes from arrival to driving away. The original key speeds up the programming sequence.
For all-keys-lost (no working key): 60-90 minutes. We read the immobilizer module to extract the seed code, then program the new key. No tow needed.
Do I need to bring my CR-V to the shop?
Yes — or we come to you. Two options:
- Drive in to our Pickering shop at 340 Kingston Rd. Cheapest option, walk-ins welcome.
- Mobile dispatch — we come to your home, office, or anywhere within the GTA. Adds $30-50 for travel.
OEM versus aftermarket — which should you choose?
For a CR-V, the aftermarket smart key works identically to OEM — same Honda chip inside, same lock/unlock/push-start functions. Aftermarket saves you $50-80. The only difference: aftermarket has a plain black shell, OEM has the Honda logo.
Choose OEM if you plan to sell the car and want a clean log of dealer-branded components. Choose aftermarket if you just need a working spare or replacement.
What to bring
- Vehicle ownership or registration (to verify you own the car)
- Photo ID
- The original working key (if making a spare)
- The vehicle itself (we need to interface with it)

What if I lost both keys?
All-keys-lost service. We read the immobilizer module on your CR-V and program a new key from scratch. $349-399. No tow needed.
Will the new key work with the alarm and door locks?
Yes — full function. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, push-start.
Can I program a Honda CR-V smart key myself if I buy one online?
No — the CR-V immobilizer requires Honda HDS programming software which is dealer-restricted and NASTF-licensed locksmith access only. DIY procedures online work for older transponder keys (pre-2015) but not for push-start systems.
How long until my new key arrives if I order from the dealer?
7-14 business days based on our 2026 dealer survey. Compare to same-day from us.
