If you are buying a used motorcycle in Ontario, importing one from another province, or registering a bike that has been off the road for over a year — you need a Safety Standards Certificate (SSC). This 2026 guide covers what gets inspected, how much it costs, how long the certificate is valid, and what to bring on the day.
When do you actually need a safety certificate?
Ontario law requires a valid SSC in these situations:
- Buying a used motorcycle privately — any private-sale bike needs an SSC to plate it in your name at ServiceOntario
- Out-of-province transfer — bringing a bike from Quebec, Alberta, BC, or the US? Must pass Ontario standards before plating
- Rebuild or salvage title — if the bike was branded unfit, salvage, or rebuilt, a full inspection is needed to return it to road status
- Re-licensing after long storage — bike off the road for over 1 year with expired registration needs an SSC to re-register
- Insurance claim returns — sometimes required after a claim-related write-down review
You do NOT need an SSC just to renew your existing plate sticker each year.
How much does a motorcycle safety inspection cost in 2026?
Pricing depends on bike type and what needs to come off to inspect. At our Pickering shop:
| Bike type | Examples | Online price (tonight) | Walk-in price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scooter / Moped | Vespa, Honda Ruckus, Yamaha Zuma, e-scooter | $107.99 | $129.99 |
| Standard Bike | Honda CB, Yamaha MT-07, Kawasaki Z650 | $149.99 | $179.99 |
| Sport / Supersport | R6, R1, Honda CBR, Ninja, Panigale | $165.99 | $199.99 |
| Cruiser / Heavy / Touring | Harley, Indian, Goldwing, BMW GS | $189.99 | $229.99 |
All prices plus HST. Most other Toronto-area shops charge a flat $200-250 regardless of bike type — we tier by what actually needs to come apart for full inspection.
What gets checked?

How long does the inspection take?
- Scooter: 30 minutes
- Standard bike: 60 minutes
- Sport / supersport: 75 minutes (extra fairing removal time)
- Cruiser / heavy / touring: 90 minutes (more components, more weight to lift)
Most inspections done same morning if you book ahead.
What if my bike fails?
We give you a written list of every item that failed plus what it costs to fix. You can fix it yourself or have us do the work. Re-inspection within 14 days is free — you only pay for parts and labour to repair the failed items.
Common failure items on used bikes:
- Tires past wear limit or over 6 years old
- Brake pads under 2mm thickness
- Worn chain or sprocket
- Burnt-out signal or brake light bulbs
- Loose or cracked exhaust mounting
- Worn fork seals leaking oil
How long is the certificate valid?
36 calendar days from inspection date — that is the MTO rule. You must use it for plating within that window. Plan accordingly: do not inspect 2 months before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get the safety done the same day I buy the bike?
Yes — that is the most common scenario. Bring the bike straight from the seller; you walk out with both the bike and the certificate ready for plating at ServiceOntario.
Do you take walk-ins?
Yes, but a quick call first is recommended to make sure the lift is open. Mornings are usually available same-day.
Can you handle heavy or touring bikes?
Yes — Goldwings, Harleys, BMW GS, Indians, Spyder/Can-Am, sidecars all handled. The Cruiser/Heavy tier covers them.
What is NOT included?
Parts and labour for any items that fail the inspection. If we find something, we tell you what it is and what it costs to fix — straight up, no markup.
