Why Your Key Fob Stopped Working After Changing the Battery

It happens at least once a week in our shop: customer changes their key fob battery, then nothing works. No remote unlock, sometimes the engine will not start. Most of the time the fix is simple and you can do it yourself. Here are the five most common causes in order of frequency.

Quick answerIf your key fob stopped working right after a battery swap, the cause is usually (1) battery inserted upside down, (2) corrosion on the battery contacts, (3) a loose internal connection from the case being opened, (4) wrong battery type, or (5) the fob needs re-syncing. Try these fixes in order before assuming you need a new fob.

1. Battery is upside down or the wrong contact is touching

The CR2032 coin cell that powers most key fobs has a positive (+) side, marked with the brand logo, and a negative (-) side. The positive side faces a specific direction in your fob — usually up. Get this wrong and the fob does nothing.

Fix: Pop the fob open, take out the battery, look at the printed orientation diagram inside the case (usually a tiny + symbol near where the battery sits). Reinsert with the + side matching the diagram. About 40 percent of “fob does not work after battery change” calls are solved here.

2. Corrosion or oil on the battery contacts

The old battery may have leaked a little — corrosion looks like a white powder or green tarnish on the metal contacts inside the fob. Skin oil from your fingers can also coat the new battery’s contact surface, blocking the circuit.

Fix: Wipe both the battery contacts (in the fob) and the new battery’s surfaces with a clean dry cloth. For visible corrosion, gently scrape with a wooden toothpick. Do not use anything metallic — you can short the circuit.

3. The internal board shifted when you opened the case

Most fob cases hold the electronics together by tension. Opening it can pop a small connector loose, knock a button cap out of place, or misalign the rubber contact pad over the buttons.

Fix: Open the fob carefully one more time, look for any small parts that look out of place — a metal contact spring not seated, a rubber button pad rotated, a small wire on the antenna disconnected. Re-seat and close.

4. Wrong battery type

Most modern key fobs need a CR2032 (3V lithium coin cell, 20mm diameter, 3.2mm thick). Some older or specific brands take CR2025 (thinner) or CR2450 (larger). A CR2025 will rattle inside a fob designed for CR2032 and may not contact the terminals.

Fix: Check the printed model number on the OLD battery you removed, and match it exactly. The brand on the new battery does not matter (Duracell, Energizer, Panasonic all work) but the model number does.

5. The fob lost its sync with the car

Some key fobs lose their rolling-code sync if they were dead for too long before the battery swap. The car will not accept the signal because it thinks the code is wrong.

Fix attempts:

  • Sit inside the car with the fob, press lock then unlock 3 times in a row
  • For Honda — insert key in ignition, turn to ON (not start), press the lock button on the fob, wait 5 seconds, turn off
  • For Toyota — use the original master key in the ignition, then within 30 seconds press lock on the fob
  • For BMW — sit in the driver seat, insert and remove the key from the ignition 3 times in 5 seconds

If none of those work, the fob needs to be re-paired with the car’s computer — that requires diagnostic tools and is a $50-99 job at our shop.

When the fob really is broken

If after trying everything above the fob still does nothing, the internal circuit board may have died — they have a finite lifespan, especially if exposed to washing-machine water or extreme heat.

Replacement cost depends on the type:

  • Basic remote fob shell + reprogramming — $79-119
  • Smart key (push-to-start) fob — $179-249 programmed
  • Luxury brand (BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover) — $299-549 programmed

Need a new fob, or just need it re-synced?

Prevention tips

  • Change the battery before it dies completely — when range starts to drop is the right time
  • Use brand-name batteries (Duracell, Panasonic, Energizer) — cheap ones leak
  • Do not wash the fob — even brief exposure can kill the board
  • If you drop the fob in water, remove the battery immediately and dry it for 48 hours in dry rice before reinstalling
