Step 1: Try the spare key
Eliminates the “primary fob died” question instantly.
Step 2: Replace the CR2032 battery
$3 at any pharmacy. About 60% of “won’t recognize” issues are dead batteries.
Step 3: Backup proximity zone
Most modern cars have a backup proximity reader behind the steering column or under the cupholder. Hold the fob there while pressing the start button. The car detects it via passive RFID even with no fob battery.
Step 4: Re-pair / re-sync
Some cars lose sync with the fob if the battery is fully dead too long. We re-pair for $50-99 at the shop — 10-15 minutes most makes.
Step 5: Replace the fob
If pairing fails, the internal board has died. $179-249 for a new programmed smart key.
