How Tesla key card works
The key card is a passive RFID card the size of a credit card. Tap it on the B-pillar to unlock and to the center console to drive. No battery, never dies. Comes in pairs with the car.
How Tesla fob works
The fob is a keyless proximity device — walk up and unlock, walk away and lock. Battery-powered (CR2032), lasts 1-2 years. $175-300 from Tesla. Pairing requires Tesla app or service center visit.
Why owners want both
- Card fits in wallet — backup if fob dies
- Fob is faster for daily driving (no fishing for card)
- Lending card vs fob — card is the wallet-friendly lend
- If you lose one, you have the other
Replacement at our shop
We pair new cards or fobs to your Tesla account via the app while you wait. 15-30 minutes total. $199 for card, $249 for fob. Tesla Service often costs more and books out weeks.
