The threat landscape in 2026
Toronto Police reported a 200%+ increase in luxury SUV thefts since 2023. Most are “relay attacks” — thieves amplify your key fob signal from outside your house, unlock the car, drive away in 90 seconds. Range Rovers, Lexus RX, Honda CR-V, and Toyota Highlander top the targeted list.
#1 Ghost-II PIN immobilizer ($1,500 installed)
The Ghost-II requires you to press a custom PIN sequence on existing buttons (cruise, radio, climate, steering) before the engine will start — even if the thief has the key. Toronto Police data 2024-2025 shows 92% theft prevention. Authorized installer with hidden install, no visible LEDs.
#2 Faraday key pouch ($25)
A signal-blocking pouch defeats relay attacks completely. Drop your key in when you get home. Cheapest effective tier — but only protects when key is in the pouch.
#3 Steering wheel lock ($150-250)
Disklok or The Club. Visual deterrent that takes 5-15 minutes to defeat. Many thieves skip a Disklok’d car because they can move to the next driveway faster.
#4 OBD-II port lock ($60-120)
Blocks the OBD diagnostic port that some thieves use to flash a new key. Cheap supplement to Ghost-II.
#5 Aftermarket alarm with smartphone notification ($400-800 installed)
Useful but not theft-stopping — alerts you that someone tried. Most thieves are 100m away in 90 seconds.
What doesn’t work
- Stock factory alarm (most modern thieves disable in seconds)
- Visible “club” signage stickers without the actual device
- Wireless GPS trackers (only help recovery, not prevention)
- Etched-window VIN (helps recovery but does nothing to prevent)
